Local Area
Tytherleigh is a hamlet situated just over eight miles inland from the seaside resorts of Lyme Regis and Seaton on the world heritage Jurassic coastline.
It also benefits from being surrounded by beautiful Devon countryside, as well as bordering Dorset and Somerset.
We are only fifteen minutes by car from the coast, Lyme Regis in Dorset being our nearest seaside town with
lovely views, fishing trips, wonderful walks, great fish and chips(!!), lovely little shops and even a theatre and cinema.
A couple of miles along the coast is Charmouth which has just been awarded a World Heritage Coastline status, it is steeped in Jurassic history and you can even hire a hammer for £3 per day and find your own Fossils, great for children and adults alike (mind those thumbs!).
The 40 minute drive along the coast road from us to the popular seaside town of Weymouth is beautiful, you follow the ocean and Chesil Beach along, driving through the quaint Dorset villages, plenty of places to stop for lunch or a wander; West Bay, Bridport and Abbotsbury all have much to offer.
Three miles away is the Saxon town of Axminster with the splendid church of
St Mary the Virgin, the oldest building in Axminster.
Most people associate Axminster with carpets and the factory can still be
seen in Silver Street. Although it's not open to the public you can see the
quality of their workmanship by visiting their showroom just out of the town. The
carpet industry was started in 1755 by Thomas Whitty whose factory produced the
highest quality, custom made carpets for the country's stately homes and
mansion houses.
A visit to Axminster Museum, housed in the old police station and courthouse,
gives an insight into the town's history with fascinating displays ranging
from agricultural tools and archaeology to old photographs.
Axminster has a variety of events going on throughout the year including the
Annual Axe Vale Festival of Gardening and Crafts, featuring floral
exhibitions, arts and crafts, antiques fair, live music and much more.
Another popular event is the Axminster Community Festival, with concerts and
events held throughout the town.
Yet another great event not to be missed is the Axminster Carnival, when
large colourful floats are watched by hundreds of people soaking up the fun
atmosphere.
Alternatively, from us drive the opposite way along the Devon coastline,
stopping in the picturesque fishing village of Beer, Branscombe a little further
on and our personal favourite of Sidmouth; lovely beach, wonderful red cliffs
for walking along, great shops and good places for lunch. Or the obligatory
Devon Clotted Cream tea!!
If it's shopping you're after, we have the historic market town of Taunton 25 minutes North and the Cathederal City of Exeter 50 minutes West.
Just over three miles in the opposite direction is Chard, where it is said
that flight was discovered. Chard was the original headquarters of Cerdic, the first King of Wessex. It
is considered by some scholars that Cerdic was the basis of the legend of King
Arthur & the Knights of the Round Table and that Camelot was in the vicinity
of Chard. In 1685 Chard was one of the towns in which Judge Jeffreys held
some of the Bloody Assizes after the failure of the Monmouth Rebellion. Chard
claims to be the birthplace of aviation, as it was here in 1848 that the
Victorian aeronautical pioneer John Stringfellow (1799-1883) first demonstrated that
engine-powered flight was possible.
All in all, The Tytherleigh Arms Hotel & Restaurant is an ideal spot to base yourself for all manner of wonderful attractions
